Let's bring back Captain Billy's Whiz Bang next!

Straight Edgers

Over at Boing Boing, Xeni Jardin wondered aloud if the term "straight edge" dated back to the beginning of the 20th century, as evidenced in these 1906 newspaper illustrations. It's for real: I saw the menu for the Straight Edge Kitchen at New York Eats Out, a very cool NYPL exhibit.

Double FoldThe pictures, by the way, come from the American Newspaper Repository, which was founded by Nicholson Baker. Its origins are recounted in Double Fold.

Boethius in his "consolation of philosophy" remarks on the happiness of straight edge life, but doesn't use the term. that was in the fifth century a.d. those 1906 dudes were trying to stay sensible amidst the excesses of the Gilded Age in america, Minor Threat were repulsed by punk nihilism which really just turned out to be another shopping mall thrill (the nihilism I mean) and boethius was no doubt trying to stay simple in a world still polluted by the excesses of the roman/byzantine empire. i like that straight edge stuff- shows strength of character. ps. my grandmother rejected red meat as a teenager in the twenties and has never looked back, although she is strict catholic and never learned to drive much less go to college. she never knew what the gilded age was-- she was on the outskirts. i like your blog. good bye!
