We Haven't Seen Tanks Like This Since Dukakis '88

The Daily News passes along Jayson Blair's BookScan numbers: 1,386 copies through last Sunday. That's including Amazon.com, which I think most industry pundits would agree is where most of Blair's readers would be expected to get their copies. And it's including the boosts one ought to have gotten from a prime-time Dateline appearance, schmoozing with Bill O'Reilly, and whatever else Blair's done to promote this sucker. (Though, in all fairness, the cutoff time probably doesn't factor in whatever spike might have come--ha!--from Sunday's NYTBR pan, which Jack Shafer has already updated in Slate after Blair's indignant reaction.) If these low sales continue, by the time the bills come in for the publicity junket, there may not be any more disputation about Michael Viner's bankruptcy...
