At a Nickel a Day, Civil Disobedience Gets Costly...

by Ron Hogan

PlanetOut has a story about a couple who refuse to turn in a library book. Seems their first grader came home with a copy of King & King, a fairytale romance in which a young prince finds true love with another prince, and they hit the roof.

"I was flabbergasted," exclaimed the girl's father... "My child is not old enough to understand something like that, especially when it is not in our beliefs."

The comebacks really just write themselves, don't they? Anyway, the parents are refusing to turn the book in until the school promises it won't let any other kids check it out, and the school isn't backing down. Good for them, and I hope they charge these parents overdue fees, too.

Comments

The book, apparently, has been replaced, at least once, and given the airtime this story has gotten, probably many times over.

Yeah, it's pathetic, but choosing ignorance happens all the time. Things like this can only be counteracted by outsmarting the stupid.

Which is a battle that never, ever, ever ends.
