And Let's Not Even Discuss the Bad Grammar

by Ron Hogan

Now, I'm in favor of stocking controversial books in the library and all that, but it seems to me there's no need to be cheeky about it, like this public servant in Evanston, Illinois:

"A good library collection should have something to offend everyone," said Jan Bojda, head of children's services at the library. "If they don't, they are not doing their job."

Surely that's a backwards way of viewing the situation--wouldn't it be better for the collection to have a bunch of somethings that would please everyone in the aggregate? But what, you might ask, has raised the ire of an Evanston citizen? The 1979 kid's book Pinkerton, Behave!, in which a Great Dane saves its family from an armed burglar; a mother complains the image of the burglar pointing his gun is potentially upsetting to small children. Library officials are keeping the book on the shelves.
