Nobody Asked, But I Just Finished All Over Creation;
Or, Summer Reads Make Me Feel Fine

by Ron Hogan

Mediabistro asks a bunch of bookish types what they're reading this summer. Good on them for giving Maud Newton and Robert Birnbaum a little extra exposure, though I'm jealous--just where the hell did Birnbaum track down the Charles McCarry backlist, dammit?

Also noteworthy, if only because it's a great title: Sara Nelson's ARC of "Seven Types of Ambiguity, a big, fat, literary/commercial, psychosexual, sort-of thriller by Elliot Perlman," which came out a while back in Australia, to mixed reviews. Very mixed, at that. But we'll see; Sara doesn't usually steer us far wrong.

Ron, the good news is that Peter Mayer at Overlook seems to be intent on doing for McCarry what Ecco tried to do for Charles Portis—they will be reissuing his back list next year.

As an avid old books bookstore troller I have found and given away over a dozen copies of Shelley's Heart which—unbelievably is out of print. But I have not found any other McCarry titles for 5-6 years, except for his 1972 biography of Ralph Nader.

Oooh, that is great news! I figured that was in the works, since they are doing for McCarry what they did for Robert Littell a couple of years back: New book first (THE COMPANY) and the backlist later...
