Jim Bunning Nominated for Hall of Shame?

by Ron Hogan

Over at TalkingPointsMemo.com, Josh Marshall points to the newest low in the GOP's playbook this campaign cycle: Kentucky legislators supporting fellow Republican Senator Jim Bunning are calling his challenger in next week's election "limp-wristed" and wondering if "the word 'man' applies to him," according to this report from John Cheves of the Lexington Herald-Leader. Bunning didn't actually make the remarks himself, but the people who made them did so walking on and off his campaign bus, and Bunning essentially endorsed the remarks, even as he officially no-commented, by commenting, "Other people are speaking the truth about Daniel Mongiardo on this bus trip."

For that, Jim Bunning belongs in the Hall of Shame, and here's hoping the Log Cabin Republicans have something to say about it. It's too bad they've been pushed even further into the background than usual since they declined to endorse Bush this year; when other elements of their party reveal themselves so blatantly, the LCR can and should make them--and party leadership--accountable for their statements and behavior. (Of course, I'm not even a Republican, so there's no reason they should listen to me!) No book mention here: I just had to get this one off my chest. (PS: I've since found out they're suing the government over "don't ask, don't tell." That's what I'm talking about!)
