If You Haven't Voted Yet Today,
Stop Reading This and Get to the Polls

by Ron Hogan

Late last week, I spoke to Dennis Loy Johnson about the pamphlets he's published about the presidential election of 2000 and Bush's subsequent inauguration. On his own site, MobyLives.com, he weighs in on the chance that Bush might actually be elected president this time around. Although when he talks about "that evil clown who, after his every utterance in the last debate gave an expectant grin and looked around as if expecting someone to give him a biscuit," I almost think maybe he's talking about the same Alan Keyes performance I caught on C-SPAN last week... But anyway, if you can't trust the papers and the TV to tell you what's going on, there's still books:

[T]hese many books will stand as a great moment in our culture, and reason for the publishing community to be proud of itself — it should be especially noted that this was an industry–wide effort, with both little house like Melville House and bigger houses such as, say, Simon & Schuster (publishers of the O'Neill, Clarke, and Woodward books). This noble effort, I truly believe, will propel us into a better future, where thoughtful people study a subject in necessary depth and are compelled to act for justice.
