Is Blog-Portant Even a Word?

by Ron Hogan

Since I was away from New York City from Saturday until Monday night, I'm only now catching up with the fashionable mommy blogs, and all I've got to add, beyond slack-jawed amazement that the NYT editors allowed the phrase "Cranky Old Bitch" to appear in print, is an echo of enthusiasm for two authors mentioned in the article, Jennifer Weiner and Ayelet Waldman, the latter of whom notes, with her characteristic dark humor, "I am quoted. But only on the second page. Something that is causing me a little bit of narcissistic angst. I mean, I know Heather B. is much more blog-portant than I am, but who's this fussy person and why is she so interesting?"

Anyway, both of them write about a lot more than how their kids and husbands drive them nuts; if you want to learn about what real day-to-day life is like for the professional writer, their sites are good places to start. (And Waldman has this great story about Stephen King dropping in on an 826 Valencia class...)
