I Couldn't Go Out, So I Went On

by Ron Hogan

I was looking forward to getting out and seeing Michael Connelly read last night, but at some point in the afternoon, my bathtub stopped draining very slowly as it usually does and began backing up whenever I ran the bathroom sink. So I decided to spend the day waiting around for a super who never showed, dipping into the new issue of Bookforum, with its awesome Pynchon tribute and thoughtful Vollmann overview, between rounds with the plunger... Anyway, you don't want to hear about that. The Closers. Harry Bosch, back on the LAPD and managing to find the cold cases that'll stir up the most trouble. Find it. Read it.

Another reading I missed last night was the New York appearance of Joseph Boyden, whose Three Day Road was just named the latest Today Book Club pick by Isabell Allende. PW Daily observed that she was just one of his A-list fans, while noting that it's barely gotten any review notice in the United States. The Bellingham Herald and New Orleans Times-Picayune were prescient enough to interview him before the buzz kicked in, though, and Minnesota Public Radio hasn't been far behind. So maybe the "big" papers will follow suit, or even cough up a review or two...and I'll listen to that MPR segment in lieu of not having met him in person.
